Help & Documentation
The Sealed Vault LLC · sealed-vault.com
Welcome to The Sealed Vault
A zero-knowledge, AES-256-GCM encrypted vault for your most sensitive documents,
personal information and legacy planning. Your passphrase never leaves your device.
We cannot read your vault contents — nobody can.
⏳ Time-Locked
AES-256-GCM
Zero-Knowledge
PBKDF2 200,000 Iterations
Quick Start — 5 Steps
1
Write Your Content
Go to the Seal tab. Type your message, document content or sensitive information into the content area. Give your vault a descriptive name.
2
Choose a Strong Passphrase
Enter a strong passphrase — minimum 12 characters with mixed case, numbers and symbols. Confirm it. Write it on paper — we cannot recover it if lost.
3
Set the Time Lock
Choose when the vault can be opened. The vault will be completely inaccessible — even with the correct passphrase — until this date and time arrives.
4
Set Emergency Override (Recommended)
Add a secret question and answer for emergency access. Share the answer with a trusted person — different from your passphrase keeper. This is the two-person security principle.
5
Seal & Share
Click Seal & Encrypt. Your vault is created. Use the Share button to send separate emails to your Passphrase Keeper and Emergency Key Holder.

🔐 Your Security is Paramount
The Sealed Vault uses bank-grade, zero-knowledge encryption. Your passphrase
never leaves your device. We store only encrypted ciphertext.
Even if our servers were compromised, your data would remain unreadable.
⚠ CRITICAL — Your Passphrase
The Sealed Vault LLC CANNOT recover a lost passphrase.
If you lose your passphrase, your vault contents are permanently inaccessible — even to us.
This is a deliberate architectural choice that protects your privacy absolutely.
✓ Write your passphrase on paper — store in a fireproof safe or safety deposit box
✓ Tell your Passphrase Keeper in person — never digitally
✓ Use minimum 12 characters — mix upper, lower, numbers and symbols
✗ Never store your passphrase in email, text messages or cloud notes
✗ Never share your passphrase and emergency answer with the same person
The Two-Person Security Principle
🔑 Person 1 — Passphrase Keeper
Holds the vault passphrase. Required for all normal access after the time lock expires. Should be a deeply trusted person — spouse, attorney or close family member.
✓ Give passphrase in person or by phone only
✓ Never in writing or digital message
✓ Must be a different person from the Emergency Key Holder
✓ Never in writing or digital message
✓ Must be a different person from the Emergency Key Holder
⚠ Person 2 — Emergency Key Holder
Holds the answer to your secret question. Can bypass the time lock in a genuine emergency — but only when combined with the passphrase from Person 1.
✓ Share the answer in person only — never digitally
✓ Use only in genuine emergencies
✓ After any emergency use — immediately Reseal & Rotate
✓ Use only in genuine emergencies
✓ After any emergency use — immediately Reseal & Rotate

Security Features at a Glance
AES-256-GCM
The same encryption standard used by governments and financial institutions worldwide.
PBKDF2 200K Iterations
Key derivation with 200,000 rounds makes brute-force attacks computationally infeasible.
Zero-Knowledge
Your passphrase never leaves your device. We cannot see your vault contents — even emergency question and answer are encrypted.
Time-Lock
Cryptographic time-locking ensures vaults cannot be opened before the designated date, even with the correct passphrase.
Access Alerts
You receive an immediate email notification whenever your vault is accessed — including emergency overrides.
Reseal & Rotate
Re-encrypt your vault with a new passphrase, new time lock and new emergency credentials at any time.
The Five Tabs Explained
✦ SEAL
Seal Tab — Create Encrypted Vaults
Write your content, choose a passphrase, set a time lock date and optionally add an emergency override question. Attach files (PDFs, images, audio, Word docs). Click Seal & Encrypt — everything is encrypted in your browser before being stored.
💡 Use descriptive vault names — e.g. "Last Will Instructions 2026" or "Business Succession Letter"
💡 Set the time lock at least 1 year in the future for legacy documents
💡 Always set an emergency override for vaults containing critical information
⌖ OPEN
Open Tab — Decrypt & Access Vaults
Select a vault from your list. Once the time lock has expired, enter your passphrase to decrypt and read the contents. Download attachments directly from this tab. Use the Vault ID to access shared vaults sent to you.
💡 Emergency Override bypasses the time lock but still requires both passphrase AND the secret answer
💡 After emergency access — immediately use Reseal & Rotate to issue new credentials
💡 Share a Vault ID with a trusted recipient using the Share button — they access it using the Open tab
📋 PERSONAL VAULT
Personal Vault — 12-Section Personal Information Form
A structured form covering every aspect of your personal, medical, financial and legal information. Navigate through 12 sections using the sidebar or Next/Previous buttons. When complete, seal the entire form as an encrypted vault or export it as a classified PDF document.
💡 Sections: First 48 Hours · Emergency Medical · Identification · Medical Directives · Digital Access · Financial Assets · Insurance · Real Estate & Vehicles · Business · Subscriptions · Legacy · Annual Review
💡 Use Export / Print to generate a classified PDF with only the sections you choose
💡 Review and update the vault annually using the Section 12 checklist
⚡ VAULT BUCKETS
Vault Buckets — Three Specialist Vaults in One
Three purpose-built vaults sealed together in one encrypted package.
🚨 EMERGENCY VAULT
8 sections of critical information for first responders and emergency contacts
📜 LEGACY VAULT
6 sections — personal letters, sentimental items, final wishes and funeral preferences

Frequently Asked Questions
I forgot my passphrase. Can you help me recover it?
▾
No — and this is by design. The Sealed Vault is built on zero-knowledge architecture, which means your passphrase never reaches our servers. We have no way to recover it, reset it or bypass it. This is what makes the encryption truly secure — even we cannot access your vault contents. This is why storing your passphrase safely on paper is critically important.
What happens if the app shuts down?
▾
Your encrypted vault data is stored in Google Firebase infrastructure — a globally distributed, highly redundant cloud platform. In the unlikely event The Sealed Vault discontinued operations, your encrypted data would remain in Firebase until the account is closed. We would provide at least 90 days notice and export tools for all users. Additionally, because the encryption is standard AES-256-GCM, the data can theoretically be decrypted with any compliant tool given the correct passphrase.
Can I open my vault before the time lock expires?
▾
Not through normal access — the time lock is enforced at the application level. However, if you set up an Emergency Override question, you can bypass the time lock by providing both your passphrase AND the correct answer to your secret question. This will trigger an urgent email notification to you. After any emergency override, you should immediately use Reseal & Rotate to issue new credentials.
Who can see my vault contents?
▾
Only you — and anyone you share your passphrase with. The Sealed Vault encrypts everything in your browser before it reaches our servers. We store only encrypted ciphertext. Even our administrators cannot read your vault contents, documents, personal information or emergency credentials. Both the emergency question and answer are encrypted with your passphrase before storage — we see only ciphertext.
How do I share a vault with a trusted person?
▾
Open your vault then click the ✉ Share via Email button. Two separate email templates are generated — one for the Passphrase Keeper (who receives the Vault ID but not the passphrase) and one for the Emergency Key Holder (who sees the secret question). Share the passphrase separately — in person or by phone, never digitally. The recipient uses the Open tab and pastes your Vault ID to locate and open the vault.
What is the Vault ID and is it safe to share?
▾
The Vault ID is a randomly generated identifier (e.g. xK9mP2qRnL4j) that locates your vault in the database. It is completely safe to share — without your passphrase, it is impossible to decrypt or read your vault contents. Think of it like a safety deposit box number — anyone can know the box number, but only the key holder can open it.
What file types can I attach to a vault?
▾
You can attach PDFs, images (PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP), Word documents (DOC, DOCX), text files (TXT) and audio files (MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG). All attachments are encrypted in your browser before upload — just like your vault contents. Maximum file size is 20MB per attachment. The number of attachments depends on your plan: Free (1), Pro (10), Family (20), Enterprise (custom-limit).
What is Reseal & Rotate and when should I use it?
▾
Reseal & Rotate re-encrypts your entire vault — contents, attachments and emergency credentials — with a new passphrase, a new time lock date and optionally new emergency credentials. The old passphrase immediately becomes invalid. You should use it: after any emergency override has been used, if you suspect your passphrase has been compromised, when changing your Passphrase Keeper or Emergency Key Holder, or as part of your annual security review.
Is my data backed up? What if Firebase goes down?
▾
Google Firebase automatically replicates your data across multiple data centres for redundancy. Firebase has enterprise-grade infrastructure with 99.9%+ historical uptime. Temporary outages are rare and typically resolved within minutes. Your data is not at risk during brief outages — it remains safely stored and will be accessible when the service is restored.
How do I delete my account and all my data?
▾
To delete your account, contact us at contact@sealed-vault.com with your registered email address and a request for account deletion. Under our Privacy Policy and applicable law (GDPR, CCPA), we will delete all your personal data and encrypted vault contents within 30 days of your request. Individual vaults can be deleted immediately from within the Open tab using the Delete Vault button.
Can law enforcement or courts access my vault contents?
▾
The Sealed Vault operates on zero-knowledge architecture. We physically cannot provide plaintext vault contents to any third party — including law enforcement — because we do not possess your passphrase or encryption keys. We can provide metadata (vault names, creation dates, email addresses) if legally required, but the actual encrypted contents of your vaults are inaccessible to us. This is documented in our Data Processing Addendum at sealed-vault.com/dpa.
